What is platform construction and why is it important? Built Environment Matters podcast with our Head of Global Systems, Jaimie Johnston MBE
The goal here is to design things with lean construction principles: using the least amount of material, handled the fewest number of times, delivered quickly, with the right information, and without waste.. Aiming to realise these lean construction goals, regardless of whether that occurs on-site or off-site, is the real objective.
It allows people to interact with each other… Anybody can come in and just have that conversation with us.’.In other words, at Circle Reading, there is the dual benefit of both a sense of community, as well as a sense of peacefulness.
Wendy Bonard-Williams says that her favourite area of the hospital is the glass walkway up on the second and third floor.‘It’s in a big figure eight,’ she says.‘Hardly anyone goes down there and it’s just a complete glass wall so you can see out...see across to the hotel and things like that.’ She talks about the quietness of the space.
‘You can literally go up there for five minutes and escape and you won’t see another person… So that’s quite nice,’ she says, laughing.’.Raj Goel sums up the general mood about Circle’s Reading facility.
‘It’s a great place to work,’ he says.
‘It also encourages a positive attitude when you come in because even the patients...when they come in...look impressed. This transformational process of on-going refinement and progress isn’t possible in traditional construction, where every building is bespoke.
It’s yet another benefit of a Platform construction approach, which helps us to achieve greater sustainability in design..Addressing the climate emergency in construction.
Currently contributing 39% of global carbon emissions, there can be no doubt that the construction industry has a serious and urgent role to play in addressing the climate crisis. The starting point is industry collaboration — a united focus on raising the industry’s understanding, knowledge and skills in relation to sustainable building.
