Center for Innovation Webinar - Design to Value: Industrialized Construction

As designers we at Bryden Wood believe strongly in the DfMA approach and have used it successfully on many projects to achieve considerable benefits.. We advocate for any designer of buildings to apply a DfMA approach by considering efficient construction methods to leverage the benefits of manufacturing and assembly, and design with them in mind from the earliest stage.. Getting started with DfMA is the hardest part and too big a topic to discuss in detail here but a great first step is to keep up to date with MMC innovations and think about how those innovations can be used to deliver better project outcomes.. Clients can support greater uptake of DfMA by demanding the best value project outcomes to ensure a benefit-driven approach to MMC adoption is applied on their projects.. As the MMC toolkit grows it becomes more and more powerful.

We are also associating process simulation data with those Chips, so that we can look at throughput, and use throughput to define what Chips we need..The Chip as future enabler.

We are often asked what ‘Chip’ stands for.It doesn't stand for anything. It's based on the idea of a microchip within a computer.

The microchip is the bit that does the hard work. It's the intelligent bit and the bit that adds value.. Chips are enabling tools that do a lot of work and add a lot of value.

Within our wider Design to Value approach and methodology, they provide a common language for all the people involved in a project, they enable collaboration and the rapid development and testing of multiple ideas.

We've seen the benefits they deliver..We believe that going forward this role will put more effort into controlling logistics, supply chain etc… In fact, roles throughout the supply chain will change, becoming more efficient and more focused on driving value.. Meeting the needs of our clients.

Over the years, we’ve come to recognise a wide variety of client drivers, including cost, time, net present value, capital and funding decisions. For some clients, accuracy in delivery is the most important thing.

For others, such as the UK’s busiest airport, Heathrow, the biggest benefit arises from having the fewest number of people on site and the fastest possible delivery. What this means is that ultimately there are many different forms of P-DfMA which are appropriate.. With Platform construction (P-DfMA), we’ve attempted to take everything we’ve learned in our client work and embed it in a set of components that clients and the industry more generally can benefit from.
